Exploring the World of Science at Northview International School in Doha

An extraordinary event was underway this week at Northview International School in Doha. The air was charged with anticipation and excitement as the school prepared for its annual Science Week

Understanding the Importance of Science

Science, an essential subject in the American curriculum, plays an integral role in shaping young minds. It fosters curiosity, encourages critical thinking, and cultivates an understanding of the world around us. Students get to explore various disciplines such as biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science, sparking their interests and igniting their passion for learning. For one week each year, the corridors of Northview International buzz with an energy that goes above and beyond the usual school day hustle. The reason for this heightened excitement? The arrival of the school’s eagerly anticipated Science Week.

Science Week: A Journey into Learning and Discovery

Themed “Science & Sustainability,” Science Week at Northview International School celebrated science beyond the traditional classroom experience. It was an interactive space for students and teachers to explore, discover, and innovate. One of the critical features of Science Week was the interactive workshops. These sessions allowed students to dive deep into various scientific concepts, engage in hands-on experiments, and witness the wonders of science in action. Another highlight of the week was the inspiring experiments. These activities were designed to ignite a passion for science in students of all ages. By participating in these experiments, students could apply their classroom knowledge in real-world scenarios, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of science.

The American Curriculum: Setting the Stage for Success

The American curriculum at our school follows the educational model used in most schools across the United States. This internationally recognized curriculum offers a comprehensive approach to education, focusing on the child’s overall development.

The curriculum is divided into several stages:

  • Early Childhood Program (Nursery to Pre-K) – 2 to 5 years old
  • Elementary School (Grades 1 to 5) – 6 to 10 years old
  • Middle School or Junior High School (Grades 6 to 8) – 11 to 14 years old
  • High School (Grades 9 to 12) – 15 to 18 years old

Upon graduation, students receive a diploma or certificate globally recognized by colleges and universities.

Key Features of the American Curriculum

The American curriculum provides diverse subject exposure, fostering strong teacher-student connections, emphasizing creativity, and promoting holistic development. Moreover, it encourages students to become global citizens, promoting cultural diversity, global awareness, and social responsibility. Choosing an American curriculum school like Northview International in Doha, Qatar offers numerous advantages. Events like Science Week showcase how the curriculum goes beyond traditional education, fostering a love for learning and cultivating skills students can carry into their future.

Pieter Du Preeze

Grade 1 Classroom Teacher

My experience in teaching began 15 years ago in the UK, where I started as a teaching assistant supporting children and young adults with autism. It was a role that was incredibly rewarding, but ultimately, my goal was to be a class teacher. After qualifying, I worked in various schools in the UK before moving to Qatar in 2017, a move which is the best decision I have made. I have loved learning about the local culture here and teaching in an international environment, allowing me to interact with children and adults worldwide.

Joining the team at Northview has been the most exciting move in my career, as we have been able to design a curriculum and ethos that places the children’s holistic development at the heart of everything we do. We want to support our pupils to grow academically and, at the same time, grow into friendly, responsible people with the necessary skills to succeed.

I strongly believe in promoting a healthy lifestyle; therefore, in my spare time, I often compete in many of the organized 10k or 21k races around Qatar. The positive effects, both physically and mentally, are fantastic. I am also a keen cook and find preparing and cooking meals from scratch incredibly therapeutic.

I cannot wait to begin welcoming children and families through the door at Northview and seeing the difference we will make in our pupils’ lives.

Come to Northview and see for yourself how we are making a difference.

Sheldon Smith

Founding Principal

Welcome to our website. As the principal, I am excited to share my international experience spanning over 24 years in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Qatar. Previously, I worked for Al Khor International School (8 years) and Al Jazeera Academy (4 years) in Qatar. With this experience, I am confident that I can bring the kind of management and leadership to Northview International School that will make it known throughout the region as a school of choice.

I am committed to fostering an environment that not only encourages academic achievement but also promotes the overall development of our students, preparing them for a globalized world. I plan to build on the existing strengths of our school while introducing new initiatives to ensure we continue evolving as a leading educational institution. As a father of a teenage daughter, I understand parents’ anxieties and aspirations when it comes to choosing a school for their children. Ensuring a safe, nurturing, yet challenging environment that cultivates a love for learning is crucial.

I have had the unique position of seeing a school built from scratch and have worked with the construction team from ground zero. I have seen the eventual rising of the beautiful school building we have today and have been able to handpick excellent teachers who are dedicated to our student’s success.

I invite you to come to Northview International School and see how we are making a difference. Thank you for visiting our website, and we look forward to welcoming you to our community.
